Online Batik Tjanting Workshop in September
FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE UNITED STATES
I’m so excited to present my Online Batik Tjanting Workshop! This well-curated kit, containing tools and materials to create your own batik design on a cotton cloth comes with three (3) one-hour batik sessions with me via Zoom.
Session 1: Tjanting technique, tools and tips. You will produce your own hand-drawn batik tulis piece.
Session 2: Painting and wax removal. You will progress to painting your piece as well as learning about the chemistry in textile dyeing! Two wax removal methods will be taught – ironing and boiling water.
Session 3: You will create a West African Bogolan/mud cloth-inspired batik piece. You will learn the vat dye process.
Session Dates: Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 2:00 PM Eastern, and Friday, September 16, 2022 at 2:00 PM Eastern, and Monday, September 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM.
Your batik tjanting kit includes:
1 Batik Tjanting
1 pound Soy Wax
3 Handkerchiefs (11″x11″)
1 10″ Bamboo Hoop
6 Designs for Tracing
5 Procion MX Fabric Dyes ( 1oz Turquoise, 1oz Lemon Yellow, 1oz Dragon Fruit, 1oz Fire Red, 1 oz Gray, 1 oz Black)
5 oz. Soda Ash (fixative)
0.05 oz. Sodium Alginate (dye thickener)
5 oz. Urea (for vat dyeing)
4 Plastic Droppers
You are encouraged to work with household tools like cookie cutters to create your own designs in addition to hand drawing the image with the tjanting that comes in the kit.
To create different effects (for example, pointillism), I will demonstrate other tools that can be used to create such effects!
Additional materials needed: You will need a melting skillet to melt the wax. Also, you will need non-iodized or kosher salt for vat dyeing in the third workshop. An old electric skillet will do – I also found this mini skillet on Amazon (Prime!) for $18.99 as of this posting.
