Online Batik Tjanting Workshop in March

$129.00

FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE UNITED STATES

I’m so excited to present my Online Batik Tjanting Workshop! This well-curated kit, containing tools and materials to create your own batik design on a cotton cloth comes with three (3) one-hour batik sessions with me via Zoom.

Workshop Curriculum

Session 1: Tjanting technique, tools and tips. You will produce your own hand-drawn batik tulis piece.

Session 2: Painting and wax removal. You will progress to painting your piece as well as learning about the chemistry in textile dyeing! Two wax removal methods will be taught – ironing and boiling water.

Session 3: You will create a West African Bogolan/mud cloth-inspired batik piece. You will learn the vat dye process.

Session Dates: Saturday, March 13, 2021, Saturday, March 20, 2021, and Saturday, March 27, 2021
Time: 1:00 PM-2:00 PM Eastern.

Your batik tjanting kit includes:

1 Batik Tjanting Kasut (Size MS, Made in Malaysia!)
10 ounces Batik Wax
3 Handkerchiefs (11″x11″)
1 10″ Bamboo Hoop
6 Designs for Tracing
2 Paintbrushes
5 Procion MX Fabric Dyes ( ¾ oz Turquoise, ¾ oz Lemon Yellow, ¾ oz Fuchsia, ¾ oz Fire Red, ¾ oz New Black)
2.5 oz. Soda Ash (fixative)
0.05 oz. Sodium Alginate (dye thickener)
2 oz. Urea (for vat dyeing)

This tjanting from Malaysia is great for beginners. The shoe-like shape holds more hot wax in the reservoir than most tjanting. The wood handle is removable, allowing for shorter or longer handle customization.

The batik wax is a 50-50 blend of beeswax and paraffin which I make myself from locally-sourced beeswax.

You are encouraged to work with household tools like cookie cutters to create your own designs in addition to hand drawing the image with the beautiful tjanting that comes in the kit.

To create different effects (for example, pointillism), I will demonstrate other tools that can be used to create such effects!

Additional materials needed: You will need a melting skillet to melt the wax. Also, you will need non-iodized or kosher salt for vat dyeing in the third workshop. An old electric skillet will do – I found this mini skillet on Amazon (Prime!) for $18.99.
